How to Critique a Finished Painting
Advise for the Artist, Art Buyer or Judge

  • Does the painting have a focal Point?  Does the viewer know where to look.

  • Is the focal point a good shape?.  And in a good place.

  • Does the artist direct the viewer through the painting or out of the work?

  • Does it have good positive and negative shapes?

  • Does it have a dominance and sub-dominance in color, shape, and direction? Area?

  • Does it have good relationships?

  • Is the style consistent with the painting?

  • Does it have to many distracting, unessential things in the painting?

  • Does it have enough interest to hold the viewer’s attention?

  • Do all the areas have variety in the way they were painted?

  • Does it read from a distance?

  • Does it have good technique?

  • Does the artist fulfill the purpose?
